“There’s a fine line between the Method actor and the schizophrenic.”
~ Nicholas Cage

Nicolas Kim Coppola was born on 7 January 1964 in Long Beach, California. He is the nephew of the well-known Hollywood director Francis Ford Coppola. In order to achieve success without having to use the family name, Nicolas chose “Cage” for his stage name.

He made his film debut in a bit part in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), which was cut from the movie.

Despite his sometimes eccentric, flamboyant and quirky roles, Nick Cage is a A-list Hollywood actor. On 31 July 1998 he received his star on the “Hollywood walk of fame”.

For his role in Leaving Las Vegas he won the best actor Oscar, Golden Globe, and several other awards and nominations. He also received several nods for his work in Adaptation as well as several other roles.

For his performances in The Wicker Man and Ghost Rider he received worst actor nominations for the Razzie award.

Cage has also directed a movie about a gigolo, called Sonny (2002)

Nicolas Cage is certainly an interesting character and is one of those actors who are able to act with their eyes. I will probably get more of his movies the next time I buy DVDs.

My Top 10: Reese Witherspoon Movies

23 September 2009

reese withherspoon walk the line

1. Walk The Line
2. Vanity Fair
3. Rendition
4. Cruel Intentions
5. Pleasantville
6. Legally Blonde
7. Freeway
8. Election
9. Best Laid Plans
10. Sweet Home Alabama

Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon was born on 22 March 1972 in New Orleans. She spent the first 4 years of her life in Germany after which her family moved back to the USA and settled in Nashville, Tennessee. Reese began modelling at the age of 7, which led to television commercials. She made her big screen debut in 1990 in The Man in The Moon.

Reese won several Best Actress awards for her portrayal of June Carter in Walk The Line (2005) including an Oscar (Academy Award), Bafta and a Golden Globe. She has also received several awards and nominations for her performances in other movies.

One of her recent movies was Rendition in which she starred with Jake Gyllenhaal, who became her sweetheart. The film was directed by South African director Gavin Hood. (Following the success of Tsotsi, a South African movie that won the best foreign film Oscar, Hood was given the opportunity to direct Hollywood movies, starting with Rendition and then following with X-men Origins: Wolverine.)

Reese is known for her un-conventional cuteness and for playing quirky, edgy and off-beat characters. She’s one of my favourite actresses and definitely features in several of my DVDs.

My Top 10: Jake Gyllenhaal movies

2 September 2009

JakeGyllenhaalcropped

  1. Donnie Darko
  2. Proof
  3. Jarhead
  4. Brokeback Mountain
  5. The Good Girl
  6. Rendition
  7. The Day After Tomorrow
  8. Bubble Boy
  9. October Sky
  10. Zodiac

Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal was born on 19 December 1980, in Los Angeles, California. He made his film debut in City Slickers (1991) and had a lead role in October Sky(1998).  The lead role in the  cult-classic Donnie Darko (2001) earned him rave reviews and can be seen as his big break. Since seeing Jake as Donnie, he has been my favourite actor.

He was nominated for the Academy Award (Oscar) and won the BAFTA for his performance in  Brokeback Mountain.  His performance also earned him several other awards and nominations.

Jake’s father Stephen Gyllenhaal is a Hollywood producer and his mom Naomi Foner is a screenwriter. His sister Maggie is also a well-know actress so I think it’s safe to say he was born into show business.

Jake Gyllenhaal is once of the best young actors in Hollywood. I’m sure he will have a long a lucrative career ahead of him.

I have several of his movies on DVD. Even though new DVD are cheap at the moment you might still be able to find secondhand DVDs cheaper in the classifieds.

Sofia Coppola

sofia coppola- female film director

Sofia Coppola was born on 14 May 1971 in New York City. She is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola and a member of one of the major Hollywood families. She started acting at a young age due to the fact that her father was a director and first appeared as a baby “boy” in The Godfather.

She studied photography at Mills College in Oakland, California and painting at the California Institute of the Arts.

Sofia Coppola made her directorial debut in 1996 with Bed, Bath in Beyond. In 1999 she received acclaim for The Virgin Suicides staring Kirsten Dunst.

She directed Lick the star in 1998 and followed the success of Virgin Suicides with Lost in Translation in 2003 for which she won a best screenplay Oscar. She became the 3rd woman in history and the 1st American woman to be nominated for a Best Director Academy Award (Lost in Translation).

She did a segment on VOID (Video Overview In Declaration) called “This here giraffe” in 2005.
She then directed Marie Antoinette in 2006 again starring Kirsten Dunst.

Sofia is definitely a director to watch out for and probably one of the most beautiful directors in the business.

So the next time you want to buy a DVD, pick up one of Sofia Coppola’s movies.
